Walk and Socialize Dogs Walk dogs
at the shelter: Call the shelter, tell them what time
you'll be coming in today. Come in and ask the kennel manager which dogs
to get (at first - you won't need to ask later, you'll get to know them
all quickly). Put a leash on the dog (we supply) and take him/her out
the back door and walk around building or play out back.
-
Brush the Dogs Not only
does getting brushed make a dog look better, it's important for their
health and well-being. Call the shelter, tell them what time you'll be
coming in today. Come in and ask the kennel manager which dogs to get
(at first - you won't need to ask later, you'll get to know them all quickly).
After you've chosen the dog you'll brush, take him/her to the lobby or
one of the front offices and brush them. After they're beautiful, give
him/her a cookie and a hug. You can brush as many as you want to.
-
Take Pictures of the Animals
Go to the shelter and take pictures of animals for Adoption advertising.
We have a number of places we advertise our adoptable animals. On the
internet, Adoption Books set at local businesses, newspapers, photo displays
at stores, etc. We need the animal's picture taken and updated often.
THIS IS A TWO-PERSON JOB (or three). We do have a few digital cameras
available and can show you how to use them and what we do to get a great
picture. Set up a time to come out to take pictures so we're sure the
cameras are there for you to use.
-
Yard Work Mow the lawn
at the shelter building once a week - we have a push mower. There isn't
a lot of grass to mow, but it needs to be kept low all the way around
the building so the dogs can go for their walks.
-
Clean Kennels and Cages
Help the kennel volunteers to clean the pens: Needs to be done twice a
day - involves dragging a hose around and spraying out the pens - then
replacing the drinking water and making sure their food is clean, dry
and full.
-
Assist with Fundraising and Events
Help with concessions preparations prior to events and help with concessions
at the events
-
Assist our Publicity Committee
with Advertising Hang Flyers up at business and various locations
in your area (3-5 places, is fine). Ideas, legwork, and writing articles.
-
Transport Cats to the PETsMART
store in Jackson, TN when pens are available in their Luv-A-Pet
room. Find out how many they have room for, go pick them up at their foster
homes and take them down to the store.
-
Transport Animals (Dogs and/or
Cats) in Carriers to Adoption Fairs from the
Shelter. Meet the Adoption Fair volunteers at the kennel at the agreed-on
date & time (usually about 8:00am). Load up as many animals as will
fit in your vehicle, make sure their paper work goes, too. Take them to
the Adoption Fair. After the Fair is over, load up the animals who did
not find homes and bring them back to their pens at the shelter building
in McKenzie.
-
Stay at the Adoption Fairs
the entire time. Often we pick the animals up from the shelter at 8am,
take them to the fair, set up and start the Adoption Fair at 9:30am or
10:00am. We usually go until about 3:00pm or 5:00pm, depending on how
things are going. During that time, you'll walk the dogs, clean up messes,
make sure they have water, etc.
-
Assisting the Animal Welfare Officer
Drive by an area were there has been an animal welfare complaint.
Assess the situation visually and report your information to the Welfare
Officer. Possibly accompany the officer on some complaints.
-
Experienced Dog Training
We are in need of an experienced dog trainer who will come out at least
twice a week to work with the dogs individually, teaching them their basic
commands (down, sit, lay, come, etc). If someone has the time, or if we
have more than one trainer, we would also like the dogs to learn some
more advanced commands (stay, heel, fetch, frisbee, etc.)
