About Us

The Carroll County Humane Society is a NO-KILL Animal Shelter in McKenzie, West Tennessee. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, with funding coming entirely from private contributions, bequeaths, fundraising and grants. We care for approximately 250 animals at one time in a building we've purchased and in foster homes. Our goal is to utilize Adoption and Spay/Neuter as our community's animal population control - not euthanasia. We hope to insure that all companion animals have a warm, safe, loving home and to assist and educate the public about proper pet care. We also give shelter to abused animals while assisting law enforcement to prosecute their abusers.

History

1999: A group of concerned citizens worked together to pick up stray, suffering animals and to give the community a place to bring their unwanted animals rather than dumping them.
2000: A large building was purchased in McKenzie, TN. In the meantime, a member had donated the use of his land to house the animals temporarily until the building was ready.
2001: The Board of Directors voted unanimously to become a No-Kill Shelter, to not euthanize animals in our care to make room for more. Later that same year the animals were moved into the permanent Building in McKenzie.
2002: Members donated funds to the Building Fund to do some roof repair, plumbing repairs and to construct four climate-controlled cat rooms with a viewing area.
2003: A backyard fenced area was constructed so the dogs could go outside and run in the fresh air. Over 200 cats and dogs were spayed or neutered, due in part to a Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Program, funded by a grant from the Tennessee Animal Friendly License Plate Program. We took in nearly 600 unwanted dogs and cats and adopted over 500 of them into new, permanent homes.
2004: Thanks to contributions, a new roof was put on the shelter building; a front office and lobby were constructed. We continued to help low income residents with Low-Cost Spay/Neuter due in part with a grant from the Tessessee Animal Friendly License Plate Program.
2005: We once again received the Grant from the Tennessee Animal Friendly License Plate Program. We helped to spay/neuter over 200 animals in part due to the grant.
2006: More improvements were made to our building thanks to the generosity of the citizens. We purchased much needed pens. Finished more of the front part of the Building. Thanks to the Tennessee Low Cost Spay/Neuter Grant we again helped low income citizens of the County to get their animals Spayed and Neutered.
2007: We are looking forward to another year of improvements at the shelter. Help us do that by being a volunteer, donate much needed items see our donations list on this web site. Of course monetary donations are always needed to help us cover the cost of running the shelter. Help us make it a great year for the animals of Carroll County.

Programs

Adoption

Our adoption fee is $80.00 which includes the Spay/Neuter Surgery, Up-To-Date Immunizations, and Heartworm Test (for dogs over 6 months old) or Feline Leukemia Test (for cats over 6 months old). If you adopt a puppy or kitten younger than 4 months old and live too far away from our vets, you pay $40.00, but are responsible for the cost of the the spay/neuter surgery and any future immunizations. All Pets adopted from a shelter must be spayed/neuter it is a Tennessee State Law.
The adoption fee also includes a 1 month free pet insurance policy for adopters in eligible states, as a gift from Petfinder.

Animal Cruelty

There is a very real connection between animal abuse and violence towards people.

One of the ways to stop violence towards people is to stop the mentality that it's OK to abuse animals; such as: "Boys will be boys" or "It's just a cat, there's more where that came from". The line separating an animal abuser from someone capable of committing human abuse is much finer than most people care to consider. People abuse animals for the same reasons they abuse people. Some of them will stop with animals, but enough have been proven to continue on to commit violent crimes to people that it's worth paying attention to.

We can help through education, stopping the mistreatment of animals and punishing their abusers through the court system.
We can not do this alone...this is a community project...

Animal cruelty cases can not be won without all the people involved coming forward. Let's all show the offenders that our community's good, caring citizens will speak up and come forward with information regarding animal abuse, show them that something will be done.

Spay/Neuter Facts:

Every day 60,000 more puppies and kittens are born in the U.S. than people
Each year 10-12 million animals are euthanized in pounds & shelters for lack of homes
In six years, one female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs
In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats
Spayed and neutered pets are better, more affectionate, companions
Unaltered animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than those that have been spayed or neutered

Directions to our Shelter Building in McKenzie, TN: It's about a mile from the square in downtown McKenzie, TN. Take Hwy 124W (Cedar St. to 4-way Stop, turn Left onto Magnolia) to the Little General Store(BP Gas) & flashing, hanging, yellow traffic lights and turn Right (Elm St.) - immediately turn Left onto Euclid. Follow Euclid about a quarter of a mile - we're on the right at 396 Euclid Ave.!
